Willows Academy is a leading medical teaching organisation in the midlands. We are proud to provide world-class undergraduate medical education to medical students from the University of Leicester, postgraduate Physician Associate students from DeMontfort University, and GP Specialty Trainees.

 

We believe teaching and learning are at the heart of everything we do and embed the student experience at the very centre of our day to day function. The student is not simply a passenger along this journey, but an active participant dynamically involved in the complex clinical decisions we make for our patients every day. Our students will have an unparalleled exposure to leading primary care clinicians including Consultant Physicians, General Practitioners, Primary Care Surgeons, Principal Clinical Psychologists, and Associate Specialists. Many of our tutors have higher postgraduate qualifications in medical education.

 

Many of these clinical tutors work both within primary and secondary care and tend to lead on the tutorials for our students. Our outstanding students will be offered the opportunity to publish research through case reports and case series through the DMU-Willows Centre for Primary Care Research.

 

Our passion for high-quality education has been recognised through awards one for the ‘best undergraduate teaching practice’ and ‘Excellence in Clinical Tutorship’.

 

The Academy also functions as a training provider for CQC compliant training to Primary Care staff and further embeds our position as an organisation which is continually learning, and continually improving.

Professor Fahad Rizvi

Fahad is a keen teacher and trainer and is the chair for Willows Academy for teaching medical students besides being involved with Integrated Professional Education, Physicians Associate, nursing and college students teaching. He has won many accolades and awards by the University of Leicester and RCGP for his teaching skills and enthusing young doctors and students to take up General Practice as their preferred career.

Dr Tariq Kapasi

Dr Tariq Kapasi has significant experience in clinical governance which is fundamental in improving the effectiveness and safety of care provided. He is a clinical tutor for the University of Leicester, leads the delivery of Postgraduate Medical Education to GP Trainees and is a research associate with the Willows-DMU Centre for Primary Care Research. He has a particular interest in Cardiology and has worked as an associate at the Leicester Glenfield Hospital.

Dr Vinay Gupta

​Vinay is a keen teacher and one of the founders of the Willows Academy, which provides a high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate educational experience and promotes excellence in teaching within the primary care setting, strengthening his links with Leicester Medical School where he taught an undergraduate course and was an examiner.

We have one of the largest Primary Care academies in the Midlands and are working hard to become the premier national institute for teaching and training in primary care. Our mission is to provide comprehensive and holistic training to our students to permit professionals to use the very best international evidence-based practice, today. We have four core functions to our academy:

 

  • Provide training to current students in healthcare practice. We provide training, teaching and education for medical students from the University of Leicester, Physician Associates and Pharmacy Students from De Monfort University, and international medical students who are seeking placement and exposure to Primary Care in the United Kingdom.

  • Providing teaching, training and development opportunities to current healthcare professionals. We currently work with Health Education East Midlands as a leading organisation for the training of specialty trainees in General Practice. The Academy has a number of clinical and educational supervisors. We aim to add value to our trainees by giving them unparalleled exposure to our Centre for Elderly Care, Centre for Primary Care Research, and innovative methods of working.

  • Providing an infra-structure for teaching and training for current staff in General Practice. We recognise the need for solution-based learning in General Practice and are aware of the current and historic limitations in the training opportunities available to General Practice staff. We have a dedicated monthly training session for all staff which focuses on priorities and risk areas as guided by the Care Quality Commission’s Key Lines of Enquiry. For example, we regularly hold workshops on safeguarding, conflict resolution and ensuring our staff have insight and knowledge into the mental capacity act and its practical applications into General Practice. The Willows has successfully led professional based webinars engaging clinicians in the United Kingdom to help disseminate information relating to immediate health priorities, and dissemination of the latest evidence-based research. We have formed links with the LLR training academy to help meet our strategic objectives.

  • Providing education to patients. At Willows we believe engaging, educating and empowering our patients is essential. This year we have delivered several national webinars which have received national acclaim, with significant media coverage.
