Willows Health, with a patient population exceeding 65,000 individuals across Leicestershire and Loughborough, has previously been one of the most active primary care organisations in the East Midlands for research and innovation. We have currently paused our research programme to focus on delivering direct patient care.
With over 50% of our patients from ethnic minority backgrounds and sites located across areas of varying economic prosperity in the two counties, our patient demographics have uniquely positioned us to support inclusive participation in health initiatives.
We previously maintained a 7-year collaboration with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and achieved RSI Level 4 Leadership Status, reflecting our strong contribution to academic research. We also partnered with organisations such as AstraZeneca, GSK, and Sanofi within commercial research.
While we are no longer part of the RSI scheme and do not run a dedicated research programme, we may still undertake ad-hoc research projects, for which you could be invited to participate.
Research Achievements (up to 2023)
- Achieved RSI Level 4 Leadership status.
- Recipient of the Research Reset programme award.
- Recruited the first patient globally during AstraZeneca’s TACKLE study in the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Randomised the first patient during AstraZeneca’s LOGOS study.
- Maintained a 7-year relationship with NIHR.
- In the 2023/2024 cycle, over 50% of research participants were from ethnic minority backgrounds.

How to get involved?
Patients meeting the criteria for research studies are notified via mail, text message, or email. If you’re a patient with us and believe you’re eligible for a specific trial but have not received communication, please contact your GP’s reception team to provide your information to the research team.
